Tarlac NHS wins gold in Pop Quiz 2012

Tarlac National High School (TNHS) comes close to retaining its championship title in the Population Quiz (PopQuiz) in the regional and national levels as it emerged champion in this year’s division level of the quiz show. 

Melvin I. Bondoc, a fourth year Special Science Class student of TNHS, triplicated the gold medal finish of his schoolmates, Aimee Rose B. Estrada and Jose Mari G. Agustin, who emerged as the national champions in 2010 and 2011’s PopQuiz.

Bondoc, coached by Mrs. Evelyn B. Bautista of the Social Studies Department of TNHS, bested 33 seniors to emerged champion during the division level contest held last thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Social Hall of Tarlac NHS.

He correctly answered all but one difficult question for a total of 38 points. He thus earned the right to represent Tarlac Province in the Regional POPQUIZ 2012 on April (the exact date will be announced later) at the conference hall of DepEd Region 3 Office in Maimpis, San Fernando City, Pampanga. He expressed his determination to triplicate the feat of schoolmates Estrada and Agustin. 

Benigno S. Aquino National High School’s Gidalyn G. Cayabyab with coach Rommel O. Castro, finished second. In third, fourth and fifth places were Ana Liza B. Fabinal of Pitombayog High School, Karen Rose Ramilio of Estipona High School – Main and Hannah C. Enriquez of Capas High School, respectively. Fabinal was coached by Leorina M. Obispo, Ramilio was coached by Ferdinand C. Melegrito and Enriquez was coached by Gina M. Lacson.


The top 3 division winners recieved cash prizes, medals and certificates while their coaches also received certificates. All participants and coaches received certificates as well.

This year’s pop quiz was spearheaded Mr. Lamberto F. Gamurot, Education Supervisor I in charge of Social Studies (Secondary).


Ms. Felilia B. Valete, Population Program Officer I of Provincial Population Office (PPO) of Tarlac, chaired the board of judges. Members of the board of judges included Mrs. Florencia G. Casco, Education Program Supervisor I in-charge of Filipino (Secondary) of DepEd Tarlac Province and Ms. Elizabeth G. Lagman, Administrative Officer I of PPO.

2012 Division POPQUIZ Notes

• Tarlac National High School won first place in the Division POP QUIZ for 4 consecutive years (2009-2012)
• Benigno S. Aquino National High School scored its second straight placement (2nd Runner-Up in 2011 and 1st Runner-Up in 2012).
• Pitombayog High School last placed in 2009.
• Estipona High School placed their highest ever in the contest.
• Capas High School had 11  first placed in a row (1997-2008), 3rd placed in 2009, 2nd placed in 2010 and 2011 and fifth placed in 2012. This streak have been unparalleled in competition history.
• Both Ramos High School and Capas High School tied for the fifth place. It was with the 7th Clincher that got Capas High School the chance to win the fifth spot. 

Historical Significance

• For the first time in the history of the Population Quiz has a school won back-to-back national champions. Tarlac NHS picked up that honor when Imee Rose B. Estrada and Jose Mari G. Agustin won in 2010 and 2011 National POPQUIZ respectively.
